Helpful Tips to Help You Relax that Have Been Put to the Test

At TCCD, we understand that dental anxiety is real and sometimes debilitating. We want our patients to be as comfortable as possible when they see us. That's why we offer a variety of amenities to help you relax, including a warm neck rest, a blanket, and headphones to minimize office noises.

We also have a variety of calming meditations that you can listen to, which we find helpful for relaxing. Go ahead and get lost in distraction while sitting in the dental chair.

Take Notes

Bring a notebook or tablet to your appointment to take notes if it is easier for you to remember information. Write down a list of questions beforehand so you can ask them beforehand.

Talk to Us about Your Concerns

It's okay to be afraid of the dentist. We understand that coming in for a cleaning or a procedure can be daunting. That's why we want to have an honest conversation with you about your fears. This way, we can take proper steps to ensure comfort and minimize pain.

Try Deep Breathing or Visualization

Please close your eyes and picture yourself in your preferred getaway spot, a hot, sunny beach, a cool, mountainous retreat, or perhaps a sandy island paradise. Imagine yourself away from your current environment.

Avoid Busy Hours

Having an appointment during a non-peak time can help you feel less hurried and more comfortable. If crowds or excess noise makes you uneasy, we can accommodate you.

Bring a Friend

Bringing a friend to your dental appointment can help ease anxiety. Having someone you trust by your side can provide moral support and help you feel more comfortable during the procedure. Also, your friend can help keep you distracted from any anxious thoughts or feelings you may have.

Keep Yourself Occupied

If you're visiting us alone, arrive early so you have time to unwind. Bring a book or a tablet to read during your appointment to keep yourself busy.

Stay Hydrated

To prevent dry mouth and to stay hydrated, drink plenty of water and avoid caffeinated drinks a few hours before the appointment.

Financial Options

For some, the source of anxiety relates to worry about the cost of dental work. Ask about interest-free financing options or a payment plan to spread out the cost of your dental work over an extended period.

Sedation Dentistry

We offer in-office sedation if your dental anxiety is too severe, and these tips aren't enough to manage your fears. We deliver nitrous oxide (laughing gas), oral conscious sedation, and intravenous (IV) sedation.

We can arrange a consultation for you to speak with Dr. Lewis about the best option.

Sedation provides a relaxing dental experience through the use of a sedative. This technique induces a tranquil state, so you remain at ease during the dental procedure. We offer three sedation options here at TCCD: oral, inhalation, or IV sedation.

Oral Sedation

Oral sedation is a pill or liquid by mouth and delivers mild to moderate sedation. You will still be awake and able to respond to questions and instructions but feel very relaxed. The side effects are typically the feeling of drowsiness or dizziness. Please arrange for a friend or family member to drive you to and from the appointment.

Inhalation Sedation

Inhalation sedation is more commonly known as nitrous oxide or laughing gas. You'll breathe oxygen and nitrous oxide through a mask over your nose, which gives a pleasant, relaxed feeling and helps eliminate discomfort. You can still respond and communicate with us. Nitrous oxide is safe, quick, and effective, with few side effects, and you can drive yourself home.

IV Sedation

IV Sedation is given by IV through a vein in the arm or hand. The medication makes you feel very deeply relaxed. You won't remember much about your treatment afterward.

Sedation dentistry is an excellent option if you prefer to have more profound sedation than what an oral sedative or nitrous oxide provides or if you have:

  • A strong gag reflex
  • Difficulty with injections
  • Physical limitations in your back, neck, or jaw
  • Multiple dental procedures

Conclusion

With a bit of preparation, our helpful tips, relaxation methods, or dental sedation, you'll get through your dental appointment with more confidence and less anxiety and stress. We always provide a safe, trusting, and relaxing environment  for the best dental experience.
