Oral Cancer Exam in Houston, TX

Overview

Our Cosmetic Dentist, Dr. Lewis, and Dr. Atabakhsh, perform an oral cancer exam on all their patients during their dental check-ups or if the patient presents a new concern. The Texas Center for Cosmetic Dentistry uses the VELscope® oral disease screening system at this dental practice to aid in the detection of oral abnormalities, such as oral cancer, oral Human papillomavirus (HPV), and oral herpes simplex virus (HSV). The VELscope helps our dentist to better view any abnormal tissue that could lead to cancer with this hand-held device, shining the bright light into your mouth to look for any changes in the patterns of your soft tissues. You can request an oral cancer screening at our Houston or The Woodlands, TX office by making a dental appointment today.

Treatment

An oral cancer examination takes only a couple of minutes to complete and most patients have no problems or discomfort. Shining the bright light of the VELscope on the patient’s teeth and gums, the dentist will be able to examine the mouth and screen for any abnormalities in the tissue. If the dentist sees any areas of concerns, the patient may need further testing or a referral to a specialist.

No cavities!! What a delightful thing to hear at my 6 month appointment. Dr Lewis really believes in having his clients have regular check ups. As a senior, I like to take advantage of everything offered to continue to have good teeth and gums. I have an oral cancer screening yearly, and a laser treatment bi-yearly to help prevent germs from causing possible gum disease. The staff are highly trained in their jobs and are the greatest in caring for the patient’s comfort. They always have a warm blanket ready for me. At the end of my visit, Dr Lewis provides a “to go” kit with a new toothbrush, toothpaste, floss and a few other pertinent dental items. Whether you’re having problems with your teeth or would like your smile to look better, Dr Lewis is the man to see. He sure gave me a smile to be proud of back in 2015. I’ve never had one single problem with my veneers in the 9 years since. And, unbelievably, getting veneers doesn’t even hurt. What a blessing!!

How Often?

Patients over the age of 18 should receive an oral cancer examination at least once a year. Patients who notice an abnormality, such as a lesion in their mouth, should see a dentist as soon as possible.

When Is The Exam Performed?

Patients should receive an oral cancer screening after a thorough dental examination with their regular dental practitioner. Most patients undergo an oral cancer examination in addition to their annual dental exam.

What If It Is Cancer?

After a biopsy is performed and a pre-cancerous condition is found, the area with the pre-cancerous cells will need to be removed. We have laser technologies on-site to surgically remove the oral cancer. Depending on your case, our doctor will recommend a treatment plan to meet your needs.

Be Healthy & Proactive
