Root Canal in Houston, TX

Overview

The Woodlands, TX Cosmetic Dentist, Dr. Guy Lewis & Associates can perform a root canal when the inside of a tooth has become inflamed or infected with dental decay, in some cases. This infection can occur as a result of bacteria from food entering inside the cracks of a damaged tooth—where brushing is impossible. Common causes of a cracked tooth include poor dental care that compromises tooth structure, chewing or biting hard foods, or extensive dental procedures that involve cutting or reshaping teeth. In some cases, we may recommend that you see one of our highly trained Endodontists to complete your treatment.

Treating a root involves surgically removing the infected or swollen dental pulp tissue as well as cleansing the tooth area of bacteria. After sterilization, the canal is sealed with a non-soluble filling material, usually a rubber substance called "gutta percha." The sealant used in the procedure is biologically compatible with tooth composition, and if properly administered, a root canal procedure will keep bacteria from causing painful, throbbing dental abscess. Thanks to modern technology and procedures, dreading a root canal at the dentist can be a thing of the past. If you need a root canal, contact us to find out how we can make your visit as pleasant as possible.

Treatment

Should your dentist suspect that you are a candidate for a root canal, the diagnosis will be confirmed with an X-ray, which will show where the decay is located. If it is affecting the tooth pulp, a root canal is necessary. Root canal therapy is an invasive oral surgery that will require you to be given a local anesthetic. During the root canal procedure, the infected area of the tooth (decayed dental pulp) is removed and the treatment area is disinfected and cleaned. Using gutta-percha, a rubber-like resin material, the tooth is filled to add strength and protection. During this procedure, a dental crown may be added over the tooth to protect the treatment area. This procedure typically takes 1 – 2 hours and will restore your healthy, beautiful smile.

I want to give a special thank you to Ashlee Welch, Dr. Fisher, Penny and Juliana for making me feel so welcomed! From the moment I walked through the door I was greeted warmly and enthusiastically by Penny! I was then introduced to Ashlee, who I absolutely love!!! She is not only amazing at what she does, but she also has an amazing personality??. Ashlee and Dr. Fischer are incredible team and super entertaining! I had a root canal performed last week Thursday and they were s...o accommodating and the procedure was seamless. There was minimal discomfort afterwards and by the next day I felt fine. I will definitely be referring everyone I know! I never thought I would have such a great experience at the dentist, but I did. They walked me through the process and pricing to make sure I understood everything, prior to moving forward, which I appreciated very much. Definetly worth the drive from Missouri City!! Thank you everyone!! I will see you soon!!

I have been a patient of Dr. Lewis' since 1996 ?when I had a lucky day and picked him out of a phone book as the dentist to do my first root canal.  I have lived in other states, as I do now, and make the trip to the Woodlands to see Dr. Lewis and it is well worth it.  I have a LOT of cosmetic dentistry due to tetracycline staining.  I have used other dentists due to convenience when I was not living in Texas and these resulted in dental disasters which had to be repaired/redone by Dr. Lewis.  Very few dentists have the attention to detail that Dr. Lewis has when it comes to cosmetic dentistry.  It is important to everyone at his office that I feel comfortable with what needs to be done, and the staff and Dr. Lewis are very good at listening to what is going on and what the end result should be.  Dr. Atabakhsh is someone whose services I had hoped I would never need, but when I did, the care I received was outstanding and caring.  Dr. Lewis' office manager Cristine has helped me out on weekends and after hours when I have had a few crisis events with my teeth, and it is reassuring to know that she is always there to help. I cannot say enough about Brenda, Dr. Lewis' assistant.  She is so caring and kind and very compassionate.  Penny at the front is always cheerful and happy to help.  I could go on and on, but suffice it to say I am very appreciative of the smile that I have because of Dr. Lewis and his amazing staff.  My teeth were incredibly bad, and they have been turned into a work of art.  I can't make this stuff up!  ;)  As I tell Dr. Lewis, the only thing wrong with him is that he is a Sooner fan (I am a Longhorn).  Thank you for everything!

Benefits of a Root Canal?

Patients who receive a root canal will save their tooth from further decay as well as maintain their beautiful smile. The major benefit of a root canal is the ability to treat the tooth without needing an extraction or dental implant. Root canals are able to treat the interior depths of the tooth without causing further harm or damage.

Does It Hurt?

Contrary to popular belief, root canals only cause minor discomfort and most patients have the same amount of pain as a standard cavity filling. Root canals alleviate the pain caused by the infected pulp and restore the patient’s healthy smile.

Do I Need It?

Patients who have excessive tooth pain may consult with their dentist to see if they are a candidate for root canal therapy. After an examination and X-ray of the teeth, your dentist will be able to discuss treatment options with you.
