Do you get anxious or nervous about going to the dentist? Perhaps these negative emotions stem from a painful dental procedure, or maybe someone you know had a traumatic experience at the dentist. “Dental phobia,” or the fear of dental treatment, is so common among patients that dentists are using an anti-anxiety medication to help reduce dental fears. This “anxiolytic” (dissolve anxiety) treatment is known as oral sedation. Administered orally (by mouth), these calming sedatives allow nervous patients to relax so your dentist can work more efficiently. When you are apprehensive your body responds by tensing up, which reduces your pain tolerance and intensifies every sensation you feel. A simple prick or scrape can suddenly feel excruciating, complicating matters for your hygienist and/or dentist. But with the help of oral sedation, you can overcome your fear and feel comfortable without having to experience absolute dental torture.

Is Oral Sedation Safe?

Oral sedatives and anxiolytic medications used in dentistry are some of the safest treatments available in modern medicine. On the “therapeutic index,” a tool that measures safety for sedation medications, oral sedatives and anxiolytic medications rank the highest possible numbers on the scale, meaning they are the least likely to have a harmful effect. While oral sedation has been researched and tested for decades and has a successful track record of being safe, it’s important to give your dentist a complete history of your health to ensure its effectiveness. This includes talking to your dentist about:

  • your diet
  • any existing medical condition
  • lifestyle habits such as smoking or alcohol consumption
  • all doctor-prescribed medications or over-the-counter drugs you’re taking (including aspirin, vitamins, or herbal supplements).

Benefits of Oral Sedation

Because patients can easily digest the sedatives, many patients prefer oral sedation treatment rather than intravenous sedation (administered by injection). This “painless” oral treatment is especially comforting for patients who fear needles. In some cases, oral sedation may even be cheaper to administer than intravenous sedation. Aside from its long safety record and high level of effectiveness, oral sedation also has amnesic characteristics, which means that most patients remember very little or sometimes nothing after receiving treatment.

I had a consultation at , Texas Center for Cosmetic Dentistry and it was a wonderful experience. The entire team was friendly, welcoming, and professional from the moment I walked in. The dentist took the time to listen to my concerns, thoroughly explained my options, and answered all of my questions without making me feel rushed.I left feeling informed, comfortable, and confident about moving forward with treatment. It’s clear they genuinely care about their patients and take pride in providing excellent care. I highly recommend this office.

I recently saw Dr. Teddy Lewis at Texas Center for Cosmetic Dentistry in The Woodlands and had a wonderful experience. Both Dr. Lewis and his dental assistant Marissa were incredibly kind and compassionate from the moment I walked in.I’m a bit of a perfectionist, so I tend to notice every little detail—and Dr. Lewis matched that energy with the patience of a saint. He is clearly a perfectionist himself when it comes to cosmetic dentistry and that made me feel completely at ease knowing everything would be done to the highest standard. His office staff were equally warm, caring and supportive the entire time.I left feeling well taken care of and truly impressed. Highly recommend Dr. Teddy Lewis and his team!

Dr. Guy Lewis is absolutely the best! I conducted months of research meeting with other cosmetic dentists before meeting Dr Lewis. Once I met him I knew he was the one! On our first visit he found a small cavity that 3 other dentists had overlooked.I live in Midland TX and traveled 9 hours. I trusted no one else with my smile. I personally know Dallas Cowboy Cheerleaders who travel to have him perfect their smiles. He is, honest, detailed and will never encourage you to have a procedure you do not need, he cares about perfection. Along with the health of your teeth, he is an artist, he sees every detail. If he feels something has not come out to his standards he will fix it free of charge. If you worry about the cost, DO NOT convince yourself that saving a little money by using another dentist is justifiable. I had the same concern; however, it is not worth compromising your smile which could compromise your entire facial appearance.A smile contributes so much to your first impression, make sure it is a good one. Your personal and professional life can be dictated by your smile. Your smile will change your life, I never realized people love taking pictures with me or of me because of my “smile”.I'm not paid to write this, I care about beauty, I want anyone seeking to better themselves to find the best professional to accomplish their goals. Life is worth living! The pure joy of having a beautiful smile is more than words can convey, your life will change and Dr Lewis is talent sent from heaven, if you want perfection do no search any further.
